Tips & Tricks for Testing Diamonds

Ever wondered how to tell if a diamond is real or fake? You don’t have to be an expect jeweler or pawnbroker to detect the authenticity of this precious stone. If you are in the market for some new bling, or simply want to get a loan for or sell your jewelry, we can help you figure out the value of your diamonds in just a few easy steps.

Before we begin, there are a couple of things you should know. First and foremost, diamonds are not transparent when held against a bright light. Diamonds are refractive and should reflect light, and, with the exception of very rare diamonds, most do include some minor blemishes inside the stone. Also, real diamonds can only be scratched by other real diamonds.

Here are three reliable tests you can try:1

  1. The Fog Test: Place the diamond in front of your mouth and exhale. If the diamond remains foggy from your breath for more than a couple of seconds, it is likely to be fake. Real diamonds clear fog almost instantly because they quickly disperse heat.
  2. The Dot Test: Draw a small dot on a blank sheet of white paper and place the diamond on top of it. Stand up and look directly over the diamond-covered dot. If you see the dot’s reflection inside the diamond – fake! A real diamond would refract the dot.
  3. The Water Test: Fill a glass with water and drop the diamond inside. If it sinks, it’s more likely to be a real diamond. If it floats, or doesn’t sink all the way, it is definitely not a real diamond.

If you still find yourself unsure about your stone after trying these diamond tests, we are happy to take a look for you. Just give GEM Pawnbrokers a “ring” anytime, at 718-CALL-GEM.
